| I recently had the pleasure of playing a mid 50's narrow panel Tweed Princeton. It's the first time in a long time I've thoroughly enjoyed playing another amp (vintage or otherwise) since my association with Lou. The sound and feel of the Princeton actually underscored my enjoyment/appreciation of Louis Electric Amplifiers, because I recognized that my Louis amps are a true direct descendant of this 50/60 year old technology. The amp had a syrupy thick and sweet distortion, which started at a volume setting of 2 (!), and got progressively woolier as I turned it up. I was playing a 1955 Les Paul Gold Top that had been modified with a pair of PAF's. The guitar/amp combination was simply to die for. It was definitely a combo I'd love to take into the studio, but obviously not one I could gig with. Lets face it, the amp is just too small and fragile to risk exposing it to the rigors of live performance. That said, I am grateful for my Louis amps - both of which easily give me a comparable sound ( if not sonically superior at times ), and are tough enough to go on the road. |
